Using the IMPROVE Coping Card During No Contact

No contact can make a few quiet hours feel much bigger than they are. You check your phone, replay the last conversation, imagine what they might be thinking—and suddenly the urge to text them feels almost impossible to resist.

That’s where the IMPROVE coping card can help.

IMPROVE is a distress-tolerance practice designed for moments when your emotions are too intense to solve the relationship problem clearly. Instead of asking, “How do I make them reply?”, the goal becomes much smaller: “How do I get through this moment without making it harder for myself?”

Try focusing on just two parts of IMPROVE:

R — Relaxation: Take a few slow breaths and let your body come down from the urgency.

O — One thing in the moment: Put your attention on something physical and immediate—the feeling of your feet on the floor, the sound around you, or the breath moving through your body.

You don’t need to decide whether the relationship is over. You don’t need to send another message. You only need to get through this one difficult minute.

    No Contact Anxiety

This card is especially useful when no contact is triggering anxiety, overthinking, repeated phone-checking, or the urge to reach out impulsively.

Before you send the text, ask yourself:

“Do I want to contact them or do I just want this uncomfortable feeling to stop?”

Sometimes the most powerful relationship decision is the one you wait to make until the emotion has passed.
