Daily Coping Card: IMPROVE: Dealing with Ghosting

You've checked their chat five times today. Still no reply. Read, delivered, or just... silence.

Being ghosted out of nowhere can feel like the worst kind of rejection - especially when you have no idea why it happened. Your brain goes into overdrive: Did I say something wrong? Are they losing interest? Should I double text?

If you're stuck in that loop, this is for you. This isn’t about them. This is about calming your nervous system first.

Why Being Ghosted Hurts So Much

Ghosting triggers anxious attachment. It feels personal because your brain treats uncertainty as a threat. You don't need closure from them to find calm — you need a coping skill that brings you back to yourself.

That's where the IMPROVE coping card comes in.

What is the IMPROVE Coping Card?

IMPROVE is a DBT distress tolerance skill we use on the coto app for moments when you can't fix the situation, but you can make it easier to get through.

When you're ghosted, you can't control if they reply. You CAN control how you cope while you wait.

    Try this 3-minute reset today:

    1. I - Imagery: Picture your safe place
Close your eyes. Picture somewhere you feel completely safe and loved — not with them, just for you. A beach, your childhood room, a place where you feel calm. Stay there for 30 seconds.
    2. M - Meaning: Find one small purpose
Remind yourself: This silence is teaching me how I want to be loved. I choose peace over panic.
    3. P - Paced Breathing: Slow your breath
Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, out for 6. Do this 5 times. This literally slows your heart rate when you're anxious about their reply.
    4. R-O-V-E: One small thing, right now
Instead of thinking about why they haven't messaged back, focus on one small thing you can do right now. Make tea. Go for a 10-minute walk. Text a friend. Water your plants.

You can't control their reply, but you can control your next 10 minutes.

    Still Overthinking?

If you're still waiting, checking, and spiraling, don't do it alone.

On coto, you can get your free daily coping card and take a free call with a relationship expert who gets it. No judgment, just real tools for love anxiety, ghosting, and situationships.

Your peace is more important than their reply.
